To reduce false precision, define the time horizon for Reach, anchor Impact to an outcome metric (for example a North Star Metric or Customer Satisfaction signal), and tie Confidence to evidence quality rather than optimism.
How RICE Scoring is calculated and interpreted
RICE is calculated as (Reach x Impact x Confidence) / Effort. The absolute number matters less than consistent comparisons across a set of options scored with the same units and assumptions.
Interpret the score as a hypothesis about return on effort. If a ranking depends on a single aggressive assumption (for example very high impact or very low effort), run a quick sensitivity check by adjusting that assumption and seeing whether the ranking changes. If small assumption changes flip the order, the decision likely needs discovery, smaller slices, or a clearer strategy filter.
